The crack of the ice, the frothing of the water, and the tiny gulls scramble to get out of the way as the power of the calving glacier shows its full force.
Beauty is everywhere. Sometimes it hits you in the face; you can't miss it. Other times, you have to go looking for it. But always, no matter where you are, you can find something of beauty. I love the grand landscape, the engaging smile, the cute baby. But even more, I love to find the beauty in the ordinary; the mundane; the thing you just walked past without a glance. If I can make you reconsider; to think about the magnificence of the ordinary - that makes me happy.

You captured the action beautifully, wonderful image, Joni. V/F
Joni Eskridge replied:
Thanks Aaron. Appreciate your kind words. Such a surreal thing to witness. We were about a mile or so off when it happened, so you don't hear what I suppose is the almost deafening sound of the breakup and the falling into the water, but the "video" is dramatic and amazing. In another location, we were closer and heard the cracking more - often hearing large cracks, but no calving. Alaska is an amazing place to visit.
Connie Handscomb
Wow!! ... terrific image, Joni! ; although it is sad that the glaciers are disappearing at such a fast rate .. this is incredible & Memorable :))
Joni Eskridge replied:
Thanks Connie. It was an incredible experience full of anticipation and drama. My shutter was working hard and the challenge was focusing on the right spot when you heard the crack of the ice and not missing the "moment". I have a lot of shots of this, but like this one best because it shows the separation of the two tall columns in free fall as well as the flying chunks and the frothing water with the gulls scurrying around to give you scale. This happened just as we were leaving the area, so timing was everything.
